The Crop Over Festival

Crop Over’s Grand Kadooment has come to an end, and we hope all the locals and visitors to Barbados have had a safe and exciting jump up. Masses took to the street to celebrate this culture filled event, which has stretched for the entire summer with a culmination over the past weekend.

For those who did not make it this year, here is a little bit about the popular Barbados festival you may not know.

Jouvert – The kick start to the weekend celebration that is Grand Kadooment, this early morning event known as Jouvert (Joo-Vay) or Foreday Morning kicks off the celebrations. This mud and paint extravaganza takes to the road in the early hours of the morning, different bands jump down the streets of Barbados dancing and drinking in an age old celebration.

Bridgetown Market – For those who as the Bajan’s would say “batting strong” are still out and about after Jouvert, join with locals and visitors on Spring Garden Highway to experience this street festival of food, music, drinks and good times. Walk down the closed highway lined with shops selling local crafts and art, as well as fashion made by our talented Barbadian artist. Don’t forget to experience the local Bajan delicacy’s at the many food stalls, everything from Cou Cou and Flying Fish to Barbequed Pig Tails. There will be no lack of local drinks either for the adventures ones try some sorrel or mauby, and for a little more kick get a 6 pack of banks or a nice local rum. Bridgetown market promises good times for people of all ages, a great place to get out and come together as one in true Barbadian fashion.

Grand Kadooment – This event can be described as “Colour for you soul”, a sea of bright costumes take to the roads in different bands but with one come goal of celebrating. Not to be missed, even if you are not ‘jumping’ line the roads and take in this spectacle but be ready to have a stranger or two dancing with you as they ‘chip’ down the road towards Spring Garden Highway. The culmination to a festival that brings Barbadians closer and gives us a chance to show visitors to our island the culture and pride that we are so proud of, truly an event not to be missed.

There are plenty of concerts and shows taking place throughout the summer, featuring our local soca artist and visiting artist from around the Caribbean. Crop Over is rich with culture, music and good times, join us in Barbados next year to celebrate our favourite festival.
