History of the Sandy Lane Gold Cup
Horse racing has been a main event at the Garrison Savannah for over 150 years, making it one of the oldest horse racing tracks in the Americas. In Barbados, horse racing is an essential part of its heritage, dating all the way back to 1845 when the island was part of the British Empire.
Today, The Barbados Turf Club is the island’s central horse racing organization. The organization has spearheaded the Sandy Lane Gold Cup since 1982. Every year, the race takes place on the first Saturday in March. Horses and jockeys from all over the Caribbean and North America come to Barbados to take part in the pomp and ceremony.
