2016 Sandy Lane Gold Cup

2016 Sandy Lane Gold Cup

It's the first Gold Cup win for owners Steven and Allan Madoo of Trinidad & Tobago, the win came on a firm track from the Robert Peirce trained bay horse riden by Jalon Samuel to claim the win in a time of 1:49.4. Although not amongst the list of favourites to take the trophy, Samuel showed a measure of class to the delight of the thousands of spectators gathered at the Garrison Savannah.

The Barbadian jockey held his own throughout the race sitting in the middle of the nine horse field for the majority of it, moving at a steady pace in 5th heading into the back stretch Samuel urged on Dorsett to make his way through the field. It was heading into the final straight, however, that Samuels made the definitive move, sprinting away from the field to win by a 3 clear lengths.

It is the third Gold Cup Win for Peirce and Samuel's second.

Second place went to Patrick Husbands on Watchyourownbobber and third place was Mario Pino aboard War Envoy. Defending champion Sayler's Creek, ridden by Rico Walcott, was fourth.

Nine horses went into the starting gates, as the Lewin Godding owned Indiano Jones was scratched from the race earlier in the day.

Also taking on the 1,800m distance around the Garrison Savannah were Daunting David (5th), Dashing David (6th), Marcus Antonis (7th), Just A Fashion (8th) and Derby Kitten (9th).

The highly anticipated race, which had a purse of over $200,000, got underway at around 5:45 p.m., almost an hour after its scheduled post time. It was a great day out for all!
